Joint Statement by lawyers’ organisations calling for the universal abolition of the death penalty

NOVEMBER 11, 2024

AIJA is proud to collaborate with a coalition of legal organisations in support of a global petition calling for the universal abolition of the death penalty. This initiative aligns with AIJA\'s commitment to promoting human rights and upholding the rule of law.

The petition highlights the inherent dignity of every individual and the fundamental right to life, as guaranteed by key international human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

In signing the petition, AIJA joins others in emphasising that the death penalty is irreversible, prone to error, and disproportionately impacts marginalised communities. The petition underscores that the death penalty fails to serve as an effective deterrent and undermines justice.

AIJA supports this unified call for action, urging countries to abolish the death penalty and, in the interim, impose a moratorium on its use. The organisation is committed to fostering dialogue and promoting alternative, humane approaches to justice.
